Capella

Atrium for the Capella Tower

Artist: Jason Krugman Studio

Location: Minneapolis Minnesota

Oomstudios rationalized the design and fabrication of the sculpture for Jason Krugman Studio. The sculpture is composed of hundreds of equally-sized circuit boards that run power to LED lights. The circuit board mesh was draped around a rolled metal tube frame.

Creating complex 3-dimensional Geometry with single-edge length circuit boards is a cost-effective way of building but presents challenges of form-finding. Using Kangaroo, a physical form-finding plugin for Grasshopper, we were able to recreate the physical process of rolling, bending, and shaping a mesh on an architectural scale.

The sculpture was installed at the Capella Tower in Minneapolis. Smaller versions of this sculpture were later installed in Brooklyn, NY, and Orlando, Florida.
